The Shakespeare Club, established in 1888, is the first women’s club in Southern California. Except for one earlier club in San Francisco (remember that Gold Rush of 1849?), it would be the first women’s club West of the Mississippi River! Originally created for literary study with Shakespeare as its first author, the women quickly became involved in civic improvement and philanthropic needs. What makes The Shakespeare Club so different from other women’s philanthropic organizations? Our rich history, our decades of friendship, and our unique way of raising money to fund our many philanthropic endeavors. For over a half century we have presented full scale Broadway Musicals and donated the proceeds to many local charities.
